Betel nut is the source of the common chewable nut, known as betel nut or betel nut. In India it is extensively used by the people and is very much associated with religious practices. India is the largest producer of arecanut as well as the largest consumer. The major states cultivating this crop are Karnataka (40%), Kerala (25%), Assam (20%), Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya and West Bengal.

Climate
The cultivation of betel nut is mostly confined to 28º north and south of the equator. It grows well within the temperature range of 14ºC and 36ºC and adversely affects temperatures below 10ºC and above 40ºC. Extreme temperatures and extensive daily changes are not conducive to the healthy growth of palms. Arecanut can be grown in areas with an annual rainfall of 750 mm in the plains of Karnataka and 4,500 mm in the Malnad regions of Karnataka. In areas where there is prolonged drought, palms are irrigated. Due to its sensitivity to low temperatures, a good betel nut crop cannot be obtained at an altitude of more than 1000 m msl.
Soil
The largest area under the crop is found in red clay type gravel laterite soils. It can also be grown in fertile loamy soil. Viscous soils, sandy, alluvial, saline and calcareous soils are not suitable for betel nut cultivation.
